STANDING DESKS - INFORMATION
Wobbly standing desks can be a real productivity killer. This is common with some of the bargain basement models that you see for sale online - you shift your weight, type a little harder, and the whole setup shudders like it's about to collapse. Whether you're working from home or in an office, a shaky desk isnโt just annoying, it can also throw off your focus and posture. If your work demands precise mouse control, such as graphic design, this is even worse.
Movement is most common when the desk is in its standing position. This is due to the distance of the working surface being further from the base of the legs (where the desk anchors itself to the floor). It can also be magnified when you are moving more yourself, such as using a walking treadmill whilst standing at the desk. Quality desks are more stable, so we always advise to consider how you will be using the desk when you are deciding on the quality of desk that you invest in. We want you and your desk to be happy companions for many years to come!
But the good news? A bit of tweaking and ensuring that you have bought the right quality of desk will make all the difference.
Standing desks often wobble because of poor assembly, uneven flooring (for example, placing them on carpet) or lightweight frames. If youโve got a tall desk with a narrow base or adjustable legs, itโs even more likely to sway under pressure.
Over time, the screws and joints may also loosen, especially if the desk is moved around frequently.
That minor shake now could become a major problem later.
First things first, grab an Allen key or screwdriver and go over every bolt. Loose hardware is the most common culprit behind desk wobble. A quick check can keep things tight and sturdy.
Uneven floors can throw your desk off balance. Most standing desks come with adjustable foot pads underneath the legs. Tweak these until the desk stands firm and level, with no tilt or rock.
Rubber pads or dense mats under your deskโs feet can help absorb vibrations and prevent slipping. This is a small upgrade that can make a big differenceโespecially on hard floors.
When it comes to standing desk frames, you get the quality that you pay for. Light frames flex more. Heavier steel models offer a sturdier base. Most of the sub ยฃ300 desks that we see advertised are in our opinion, only fit for the skip. Thin flimsy legs with lightweight tops. This is not a set-up that is going to lead to a good working experience, so be sure to check the reviews carefully!
Also, a 3-stage frame is more sturdy than a an equivalent 2-stage one. If stability is important to you or if you have a reasonably weighty setup, it is 100% worth the extra cost in our opinion.

Your desk top needs to take the weight of your equipment, and for items such as monitors (single, dual, triple or more), this may be distributed (via a monitor arm) to a single point on the edge of the desk (held on via edge or through clamp). We sell lots of quality replacement tops to people who have bought desks from other major suppliers and found that the tops were just not up to the job.
Our advice:
Think about the pacement of your items on your desk and spread out the heavier items. For example, if your monitors are in one corner and you have a CPU tower anchored under the desk, fix this on the opposite side. Balance is good and leads to stability.
