What to Consider When Deciding Which Standing Desk is Right For You

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already heard that standing desks offer a new way to approach your workspace. The point isn’t about grand promises or wild claims; it’s about giving yourself options in how you work. Switching between sitting and standing can help break up long stretches at your desk, and it can make your setup feel more dynamic. Whether you’re after a bit more flexibility or simply want to shake up your routine, standing desks are worth considering.

Some people find that changing positions throughout the day helps them stay alert or focused. Others appreciate the freedom of movement, being able to stretch, sway, or shift their weight as they work. For those who need a workspace that adapts with them, a standing desk might just be the answer. There are many different models on the market, and deciding which sit stand desk to buy can be confusing. To make the right decision, you should consider the following areas:

Key Features to Look for in a Standing Desk

A standing desk isn’t just a table on legs; there’s plenty going on beneath the surface. Before you get lost in colour swatches and design choices, it’s worth focusing on features that will actually change how you use your desk every day.

Adjustable Height Options

The core of any good standing desk is adjustability. You want something that moves easily between sitting and standing heights, and ideally stops wherever works best for you. Some models have preset height options; others let you fine-tune every centimetre of lift. Consider who else might use the desk: if it’s shared, flexible adjustment is even more important - so we would recommend a desk with preset heights so users can store theirs and set them at the touch of a button. You may hear this function referred to as a memory controller. Check that it supports enough preset heights for you - most store 3 or 4. If the desk is to be used in a shared or hybrid office, then 4 presets won't be enough. In this circumstance, consider a smart desk which comes with an app so that a user can connect to any compatible desk and take their preset heights with them, whatever desk they are using. This app-based control is also great for tracking sitting/standing time so that you can keep an eye on your active working progress. It can even provide reminders to sit or stand to keep you on track with the goals that you set in the app.Β

If you're not sure where to start with height ranges or what works best ergonomically, take a look at our guide on what to look for in a standing desk. It covers practical advice so you can match your choice with how (and where) you'll actually use it.

Desk Stability and Build Quality

No one wants their monitor wobbling when they type or their coffee threatening disaster every time they adjust the height. Stability matters, a lot, especially if you're planning to load up your workstation with multiple monitors, speakers, or heavier equipment.

The construction materials play into this: steel frames tend to be sturdier than lighter alternatives. The quality of moving parts (like lifting columns or cranks) is also key for long-term reliability. Be aware that the lifting columns will be 2-stage or 3-stage. This describes the number of sections that make up each leg. A 2-stage adjustable desk is typically cheaper, has a smaller height range and is of lower quality than 3-stage frames.

Most standing desks are 2-leg (or 3-leg for corner desks). From a stability point of view, the general rule is that more legs provide more stability. Of course, the extra engineering and motors will add to the cost. If your use case demands maximum stability (for example music production or graphic work), consider a four-leg standing desk. If music production is part of your workflow, or if you run lots of gear, consider checking out our insights on the best standing desks for music production, . This covers a video review from a music producer, where stability gets an extra close look.

Comparing Manual vs. Electric Standing Desks

A key question: do you go manual, or opt for electric? Both have their place, it depends largely on what suits your space and habits.

Manual desks, often adjusted by crank or lever, come with fewer moving parts and usually at a lower price point. They’re reliable and don’t require access to power outlets; perfect if simplicity appeals or if portability matters in your setup.

Electric desks, meanwhile, make shifting heights nearly effortless, just press a button and let the motor do its thing. This can be especially handy if you'd rather not interrupt your workflow every time you want a change of pace (or position). Many electric models also feature memory presets, saving preferred heights for instant recall, handy if several people share one workstation.

If you're thinking about adapting an existing desk instead of replacing it outright, consider whether a desk top converter could give similar benefits without starting from scratch, a useful option covered in our article what is a standing desk converter?. These are low-cost and provide a great way to try sit-stand working with minimal investment.Β

How to Choose the Right Size and Style

Your ideal workspace isn’t just about height, it’s about making sure everything fits comfortably within reach while leaving enough room for all your tech (and maybe even some plants!). Start by measuring both the space available in your office area and listing everything that needs real estate on top, from keyboards to monitors, right down to headphones and stands. If lots of desk top space is important to you, consider a corner standing desk. These are more space-efficient and also tend to work well in a home space where they will fit into a corner rather than taking up a large area of wall space.Β

For space efficiency in office environments, consider a "back-to-back" or "double" standing desk. These are 2 straight desks positioned facing each other with shared cable management and privacy screens.

If you're unsure how much desktop surface you'll need, or which size will suit both home offices and studio setups, check out our breakdown at what size standing desk do I need?. It’ll walk you through practical scenarios so nothing gets left out (even those massive dual monitors).Β

Aesthetics matter too: consider finishes and colours that blend well with what’s already around you rather than clashing awkwardly mid-room. We also provide fixed (or static) desks that match with our height adjustable finishes. These work well in offices where not everyone is likely to use a sit stand desk.

Don’t forget cable management; tangled wires quickly spoil even the slickest setup! A quick read through how to do cable management for a standing desk goes beyond hiding cables, it makes daily life tidier (and safer).

Budget Considerations and Value for Money

The price range for standing desks is wide, from budget-friendly basics through serious investments meant for commercial daily use.

As with most things, you will get what you pay for. Unfortunately, "cheapest" is often not a good option. We frequently get approached by customers asking for help with low-cost sit stand desks from other retailers that have failed.Β  Often, they are unable to get post-sales support from their bargain-basement retailer.

We also have many customers who want to replace low-cost, thin desk tops from other stores that have bowed under the weight of equipment. Cheap desk tops have a honey-comb design inside and are very light-weight. This means that they are not good for supporting items such as monitor stands clamped to the desk top.Β

It pays off long-term to weigh upfront costs against durability and user experience; sometimes spending slightly more means smoother adjustments and years more reliable performance.Β

If cost is top-of-mind but flexibility still matters most, manual options, or even converters, might be all you need without breaking the bank. On the other hand, investing in an electric model may offer better ease-of-use day-to-day if budget allows, and keep frustrations low over time thanks to smoother transitions between settings.

No matter which end of the price spectrum catches your eye first, keep value front-and-centre: prioritise features you'll actually use every week over bells-and-whistles that sound impressive but rarely come into play after setup day. Durability counts, they should feel solid now but also five years from now, and straightforward warranties never hurt either.

The best choice? It's always one tailored around how (and where) you'll really work, not just what looks good online, or is in the not-to-be-repeated (until next week!) flash-sale or has buzzword-heavy feature lists attached.
