Treadmill desks and walking treadmills are excellent for staying active while working. They allow you to walk at a slow pace while handling emails, calls, or admin tasks, helping to reduce sitting time and improve circulation. Unlike gym treadmills, these models are quieter and designed for steady, low-speed use throughout the workday. Walking treadmills are often used in conjunction with a standing desk, which in itself encourages more gentle movement and healthy posture whilst working.
Both of these products are a great choice to add more movement (and burn more calories) whilst you go about your working day in your office. Under-desk treadmills are better for natural movement, offering a walking motion that more closely mimics daily activity. While desk bikes may be quieter, treadmill desks encourage full-body movement and help break up long sitting periods. Some models are surprisingly quiet and compact, making them a good fit for many office environments.
If you’re using a treadmill desk, it’s better to think in terms of walking time. Many users aim for 30–60 minutes of walking at a time, two or three times throughout the day. The key is to ease into it - start with shorter sessions and work your way up to what feels comfortable and sustainable. If you are moving from seated working to sit/stand working, take a look at our information articles that explain how to phase this transition so that your body adapts to the change quickly.
Absolutely! Using a treadmill desk, desk bike and/or a standing desk can improve focus and reduce fatigue. The gentle movement keeps your blood flowing, which helps maintain energy levels during long workdays. Most people adapt quickly and find they can type, take calls, and complete tasks just as easily while walking slowly, cycling or standing.
Our walking treadmills are quiet enough for shared spaces, especially those designed for office use. This and the fact that they are manufactured for many years of intensive use (they are gym quality) is the reason why our models are at the premium end of the market. We hear many stories from customers who are buying to replace cheap models that burn out or fail after only a few months of usage. Desk treadmills run at lower speeds and are built to be less disruptive than gym machines. It’s always best to choose a low-noise model and check with colleagues if you’re working in a particularly quiet environment.
Lifespan Frequently Asked Questions
No - it's a giver, not a taker! The only power that the Ampera needs is that generated by you. It has an onboard battery used to store this power and to feed it out to the LED gears and the induction and USB-C charge points for your devices. This is a great motivator for you to use it on a daily basis - can you keep your phone powered up on your leg power alone?
This refers to the console that is supplied with Lifespan walking treadmills. The console is used to control your device and to track the progress that you are making. DT3 consoles are retro-style long units and provide all the features you need, including readouts for steps, time, distance, calories and speed. The SC130 consoles (also known as 'Omni') are a higher-spec sleek desktop console. This will take less space on your desk and has a modern display, control interface and Bluetooth connectivity to link to the Lifespan app. Both consoles sit on your desk top.
You likely can. Things to consider before you decide: (i) Bear in mind that when standing at your desk on the treadmill, you will be elevated by around 10cm from the floor. You will need to adjust your stand-at-the-desk position upwards by the same amount. So, if you're tall, then your standing desk will need a good upper range. (ii) The treadmill is 72cm wide, so allow for this width to fit between the legs of your desk. If you plan to leave the treadmill in situ and sit alongside it when it is not in use, then you will need a sufficiently long desk. We recommend a straight desk of at least 1.8M length to make this practical. Corner desks are more difficult to use in this way because you will typically have less of a straight run to accommodate the treadmill's 72cm. Of course, if you plan to move the treadmill away when not in use (it can be stored in an upright position), then this is not a problem. If you can keep your treadmill in place, it is very easy to switch to walking mode, and you are more likely to make good use of it. If you have the space, some customers use our treadmills on the other side (opposite to the sitting side) of their straight sit stand desk. Please think about the set-up that will best work for you and your space before ordering, and then we will help supply your ideal configuration.
Our desk bikes can be used with a height-adjustable desk, and this combination is great for working while you cycle. It can also be used at a high fixed height desk, such as a "poseur table", breakfast bar or standing bench. The main criterion is that the desk is high enough to offer enough clearance for your legs to operate the bike. Having your legs under the desk will help you to adopt a good ergonomic posture.
We sell 3 models of Lifespan fitness workplace walking treadmills - the TR1200, the TR5000 and the TX6 walking pad. The TX6 is designed for stand-alone use (for example, whilst watching TV or listening to music). It runs up to a gentle jogging speed and has a digital display on top of the treadmill. It can be used under a desk, but needs the separately available SC130 console plugged in to get a digital display on the desk and to provide the operating controls. Attaching this console also turns the walking pad into an under-desk treadmill and limits the upper speed to a fast walking speed for safety reasons (never attempt to run while at your desk). The TR1200 is our all-around under-desk treadmill model, whilst the TR5000 is more heavy-duty. In general terms, the TR1200 will better suit a single user (for example, a home office or dedicated desk), whilst the TR5000 is engineered for a workstation that may be used by several different people throughout an extended day. To support these different usage scenarios, the TR5000 is engineered for a longer period of daily use, to support a higher user weight, has a heavier duty motor, a heavier duty belt and a thicker deck. Please see the product specifications on each product listing for more details.
